Back on the Horse

So at the weekend I raced at Round one of the IXS European cup at Monte Tamaro, Switzerland. I wasn’t really planning on actually racing as it was my first time back on the bike since my injury at the beginning of February, also the first outing for my new MS Evil Racing team and onboard my new Evil bike which is super sick I must say! So I just took it as it came and did a few runs I didn’t feel that great on the bike but was improving with each run I did, although the course got chopped up pretty good and made it pretty harsh on my arm which is still a bit sore to ride with, and i was also getting arm pump which I never get other wise but I suppose 3 months off the bike will do that.

So I decided I would just give the race a go anyway and wasn’t too worried about results, but at the sametime I hate going to a race and not giving it everything but I rode pretty steady and didn’t have the best of runs well it certainly wasn’t how I wanted to be riding, but I have a good few more weeks to get ready for Fort Bill where I want to be back at 100% and give it my all. I still managed to take a 9th place which I was happy enough with, my MS Evil team mates did pretty sick with Brook taking 5th place and Markus Pekoll taking out the win for the team which was pretty awesome to see!

So now I am back in Austria to do some more riding and get some more training in for Fort Bill and get all the strength back in my arm.

I want to thank everyone that helped me out over the weekend especially all the guys at MS Evil Racing, I am stoked to have such great support from them this season and it will make it alot easier for me to get the job done on track. Also big thanks to my sponsors Backflips Clothing, Adidas Eyewear, Burgtec, Loaded Isotonic Drinks, Infamous Designs, and THE Helmets

Injury Update

So it's been nearly 3 weeks since I hit the deck in Nelson, whist racing Round 4 of the NZ DH Cup, here's a run down on what happened down there.

It was my last practice run before racing was due to kick of and was coming in to a steep chute and went to hop in to it at the top of it but caught a loose rock as I took off and then I came short and went for an over the bars excursion, I ended up falling probably around 4 meters and landed on pretty much a rock garden, I smashed my helmet pretty bad and even blew my goggle lense out from the force of it, so I came out with a solid concussion. I think my arm must have taken the first impact as it snapped both bones below the elbow, one came out of the skin and even out of my race shirt and in to the dirt before going back in to my arm on the next impact. I am sure my Leatt brace did its job as I had big marks on my shoulders from where my helmet had pushed on it.

It took a while to get off the hill as it was a very difficult spot to access and I was going to get a chopper but after nearly an hour of waiting to hear if the chopper was coming or not, I was told I would have to walk which wasn't the most comfortable thing as even though my arm was in a splint it was still moving around, I was lucky to have a pain relief whistle from the First Aid guy's which i promptly finished the first bottle in 5 minutes and they had to get someone to bring another one down to me, it was good stuff almost like being really drunk, which at the time was pretty good.

When I finally got to the hospital I was put through to surgery pretty quickly which I was happy about, that anesthetic was good stuff too, I remember talking some shit when I woke up I didn't even know what I was on about or where I was. I spent three days on the hospital and then was let out for what ended up being only a few days as I had to go back in cause my arm got infected, which apparently happens to most people with compound breaks. So I had to go under surgery again in order for them to clean all of my arm out and then had to stay another four days on antibiotics to make sure it was ok before they let me out. Once out I flew home which is where I am now I was glad to get home after a week in hospital!

I have just started training again yesterday which feels good after a couple of weeks of doing nothing sitting in bed its good to be back training and I am working towards being back stronger than before and ready to go for Round two of the World Cup Series in Fort William, Scotland, I am already amping to get back on the bike so the time off should do me some good.

I just want to thank everyone that helped me out all the First Aid guys and then everyone who visited me when I was in hospital or sent messages, I really appreciate it. I want to say a big thank you to everyone at Wide Open for supporting me for the 2011 NZ season, I am gutted I cant be in Dunedin this weekend defending my NZ title for you guys! I also want to thank my personal sponsors Backflips clothing, THE, Leatt Brace, Infamous Designs, Loaded Isotonic drinks, Adidas Eyewear, Pinstripe and Burgtec.

Also my thoughts are with everyone down in Christchurch at the moment.

Back in NZ

So I have been back here in NZ for a few weeks now after my three month trip to Chile and our summer national series has just kicked off here in NZ, I have been onboard a new 2011 Turner DHR which is super sick as I have a deal with Wide Open Distributors for the NZ race season, the first round didn't go so well for me with a mechanical in the final after qualifying .3 behind Blinky.

Here's my run down of the 2nd round,

Last weekend I raced round two the NZ Downhill Cup, in a hot and sticky Napier. The track was super dusty and had a a mix of flatter sections and steep and loose, making it a pretty hard course to race as there was a lot of pedaling making you pretty tired before you hit the steep gnarly sections, but it was still a pretty fun course to ride.

My qualifying run didn't go as well as I had hoped as I had a crash in an easier section due to all the dust and a lapse of focus, I got straight up and still put in an effort to the finish to qualify 5th place which i was happy with considering a crash.

Then for finals I tried to conserve some energy for the flatter parts and rode most of the run pretty cautious to make sure I didn't make any mistakes especially after having a disappointing mechanical at the first round of the series. When I crossed the line I knew I had been too conservative, and I finished 4th three seconds back and .8 of a second behind 2nd place, I was still happy to put in a solid ride and get on the podium but 4th isn't what I am looking for. So now we roll on to this weekend in Rotorua for the third round, a course I know well so I am definitely going to be holding it wide open this weekend.
